Understanding National Occupational Classification (NOC)

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is the nationally accepted reference on occupations in Canada. It lists over 30,000 job titles, both public and private, and grouped under 520 headings. If you look at all economic-based programs in Canada (Federal and Provincial levels), qualifying occupations are identified under NOC headings and not by job titles. Unlike the job group of Registered Nurses that is a clearly identified occupation, other job headings are much more than what meets the eye.

Let’s take for example NOC 1234 Insurance and Financial Advisory Services (see below); to an untrained person, you most likely will disqualify yourself if you take this job title verbatim because you do not consider yourself as an Insurance and Financial Advisor. But did you know that there are over 100 possible job titles under NOC 1234 that may qualify an applicant working in the insurance and financial industry? Some of these NOCs are even classified under different NOCs or have sub-NOCs that increase possible job titles. Applicants whose occupation falls under NOC 6231 Insurance Agents and Brokers may qualify under NOC 1234. However, if you are under NOC 6231 researching your chances of qualifying, you most likely will get disappointed because you will not find your profession heading as a qualifying occupation because it is “hidden” under a different

Only a trained job duties evaluator and NOC researcher can uncover these hidden opportunities.
